Scriptural Hermeneutics in Sunni Muslim Juristic Thought

In the latest installment of IQSA’s Review of Qur’anic Research 1, no. 3, Mohamad Ballan (University of Chicago) reviews Jonathan A. C. Brown’s ambitious new book, Misquoting Muhammad: The Challenge and Choice of Interpreting the Prophet’s Legacy (London: Oneworld, 2014), which explores the relationship between the Qurʾan and Ḥadīth and the various subjective ways that Sunni ʿulamāʾ in medieval and modern times have selectively appropriated the scriptures in their debates.
